The project to strengthen the medical laboratory at the "Centre de Santé Luigi Tezza" continues in 2019. We set up this laboratory in Kokumbo, 300 km from Abidjan, and are still expanding it, after an assessment mission carried out with technicians Osvaldo Martelli and Lodovico Coluzzi to evaluate the current knowledge of the local technicians.
We plan to send a new blood cell counter and an expatriate technician who will train the local staff, including basic biochemistry and stoichiometry.
In November 2016 we also installed a new ozone therapy unit for treating wounds and Buruli ulcer. Our doctor Alma Izzo trained the local staff in using this equipment.
The bacterium that causes Buruli ulcer infects patients through the bite of an insect found in the Ivorian lagoons. Fishermen and children who bathe in these areas come into contact with it. This is why prevention and knowledge of the disease are crucial.
Our project therefore operates in a particularly difficult context, as resources are scarce in the face of ever more pressing demand from the population. For this reason, we are constantly working to help the Camillian Sisters who run this hospital.
