Health and nutrition. Since it began in 2015, this mission has combined two projects of vital importance for Intermed: a health project to prevent human papillomavirus (HPV) and fight malnutrition, and an agricultural project for poultry farming and crop growing.
The first involved a survey of HPV in the female population, particularly in the Koupéla area, and of the possibilities for diagnosing and treating the infection.
The second led to the creation of a poultry farm and the sowing of fodder crops to help feed the local population.
In addition, in the village of Ziniaré, where the Camillian Sisters have built a mother and child health centre, the project included drilling a well and connecting it to the local water mains, to secure the water supply for our two other objectives (which we can now say have been achieved): the malnutrition centre and the vegetable garden producing misola, an enriched flour that helps children suffering from malnutrition.
We completed training for laboratory technicians at the Daughters of St. Camillus medical centre in Dassasgo, Ouagadougou, with a course taught by our laboratory technician Osvaldo Martelli.
We are continuing to raise funds to strengthen this centre, which serves a large catchment area. Mother and child health is the first step in preventing malnutrition and building the future of this population, which now more than ever needs our support and solidarity.
The Dassasgo health centre is currently being renovated. A radiology service is planned to meet growing demand from patients.
